Manhole covers in Japan became an interest of mine while living there 13 years ago.
In Hiroshima, they are proud of their baseball team, the Carp, although the few games I saw on TV while there didn't provide much opportunity for pride. Their pitching was really awful.
In Minoh, they are very proud of their waterfall. I'll show some pictures of that in a later post.
In Kyoto, the motif was the imperial chrysanthemum and a turtle in the middle. the turtle points three ways, depending on how you look.
Osaka is very proud of its castle, a location of an incredible amount of Japanese history. Originally, it was built by the first unifier of Japan, Hideyoshi Toyotomi in the late 1500s. His son lost it to the man who later became the first Shogun.
This azalea cover is from Tokyo. They had a lot of azaleas in Tokyo.
This cover is also from Tokyo, and is a variation of the first Shogun's family symbol.
Also from Minoh, they are proud of their forest, with its many maple trees whose leaves flame brightly in the fall.
